about

This release connects across oceans, bringing together solo excursions from two pivotal players in the UK and US scenes in one place. The artists involved are woven into the fabric of the indie-pop underground. So, who are they and what is it?
It’s a split cassette from Ged McGurn aka Geddy Laurance and Michael Olivares, released via York label Safe Suburban Home.
Ged drummed for Sarah and Slumberland records cult indiepunk favourites Boyracer, and has drummed, played bass and sung in bands like Downdime, City Yelps, Wonderswan and the Vat-egg Imposition (on cult indie labels like Emotional Response, Odd Box, Squirrel and Alphaville), whilst promoting DIY gigs in the Leeds area.
Best known for fronting Bay Area band The Mantles who made rough guitar pop for classic indie labels such as Siltbreeze, Slumberland (them again) and Mexican Summer, Michael Olivares began crafting solo tunes around 2013 with occasional help other Bay Area freaks and janglers from bands such as The Oilies, The Art Museums and The Bananas, among others.
This split cassette brings two kindred spirits together navigating a strange turbulent world.
Given the combined heritage this isn’t necessarily what you’d expect, not that it ever is. The lo-fi jangle remains but in a more sedated, trippy manner than before. These are not indie-punk blasts, the tracks exploding in a psychedelic haze rather than a cloud of distorted fuzz. Fans of any of their previous output, and also Modern Lovers, Syd Barrett, Durutti Column or Kevin Ayers will find much to love.
Ged’s dreamy, pastoral and delicate tune ‘Just One Of Those Things’ is an ironic take on the everything is reduced down to its simplest form in an increasingly complex and challenging world, just so people can make sense of it. His second offering ‘Prolonged’ is an ode to Greta Thunberg and everything she stands for as a young person taking on a global crisis.
Taking a jaunty approach to singer-songwriter tropes, Michael’s philosophises on an individual extending an invitation to potential visitors on ‘See Me Again’, and molecular/celestial observations while walking on ‘Flesh Flies’. All four tracks take poetic license in explaining ideas and issues central to our recent, strange existent.
This split represents a fascinating new era for two kindred-spirits already woven into the history of independent music.
